TOF Technology and Algorithms

What is it?

Time-of-Flight (TOF) technology is an active depth sensing method that calculates distance by measuring the time taken for a light pulse or modulated wave to travel from the emitter to an object and back to the sensor. Unlike passive stereo vision, TOF provides precise, pixel-wise depth information regardless of texture or ambient lighting conditions.
The core components include Photon Mixing Devices (PMD) or Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPAD) sensors, coupled with high-speed timing circuits that convert time differences into phase shifts or direct time counts to generate real-time 3D point clouds.

Summary: TOF technology enables active, pixel-wise depth sensing by measuring the round-trip time of light, ensuring reliability in diverse lighting environments.

How does it work?

The TOF workflow consists of three key stages: active illumination, signal acquisition, and depth calculation.
  • Active Illumination: Infrared laser diodes or LEDs emit modulated near-infrared light (typically 850nm or 940nm).
  • Signal Acquisition: Sensor pixels synchronously receive reflected light, extracting phase information via Correlated Double Sampling (CDS) or recording direct flight time.
  • Depth Calculation: Depth is derived using the formula $Distance = \frac{c \cdot \Delta t}{2}$ or $Distance = \frac{c \cdot \Delta \phi}{4\pi f_{mod}}$, based on phase shift $\Delta \phi$ or time difference $\Delta t$.
Algorithmically, the system addresses Multi-Path Interference (MPI), flying pixels, and ambient light suppression. Multi-frequency modulation unwraps phase to extend the unambiguous range, while spatiotemporal filtering (e.g., bilateral or guided filtering) enhances depth map quality.

Summary: The process involves emitting modulated IR light, synchronously capturing reflections, and mathematically converting phase or time data into metric depth values.

Why does it matter?

TOF technology excels in low-texture, low-light, and high-dynamic-range scenarios, overcoming the limitations of stereo matching algorithms that rely on feature richness and heavy computation. Its hardware-level depth output reduces backend processing loads, enabling low-latency real-time 3D perception.
Furthermore, the compact form factor and low power consumption of TOF sensors make them ideal for mobile devices, robotics, and wearables, providing foundational data for edge-based 3D vision applications.
